Frequently Asked Questions
What is a scar?
A scar results from a build up of collagen at the site of a wound – or anywhere skin has been cut, burned or otherwise damaged. Collagen acts as a ‘patch’ to repair the damaged skin. It usually darkens, raises and toughens the damaged area.
How long does it take to repair a scar?
The length of time to improve scar appearance varies from person to person and the degree of scarring. Fading and shrinking scars requires dedication and routine. Some see results in as little as a few weeks, for others it takes longer. Dedication to the daily application of silicone patches and serum is key to achieving results.
What are the ingredients?
Neosil® scar products are made with 100% poly-dimethyl siloxane, or medical grade silicone. There are no active ingredients.
Are the results guaranteed?
While no scar treatment can guarantee that your scar will disappear, strict adherence to a scar treatment routine will shrink and fade scars. Individual results will vary depending on the size, thickness and discoloration of each scar.
Who should use Neosil® Scar Therapy Products?
Anyone who has a raised, discolored (hypertrophic, keloid) or tightly stretched (burn) scarring will benefit from using Neosil®.
Why choose Neosil®?
Neosil® scar treatments are made with a unique, proprietary silicone formulation. Silicone based scar products are clinically proven to improve the appearance of raised and discolored scars.
How do I use Neosil® Scar Therapy Products?
Neosil® scar therapy products are easy to apply and use. Simply wash and dry the scar site or fully closed wound and apply. Re-apply daily as per our instructions for use.
Can I use these with other products?
We recommend a strict adherence to wearing Neosil® scar sheets a minimum of 12 hours daily or applying Neosil scar serum 3 to 4 times daily.
What if I miss a day?
While we recommend daily application, a missed day will not be a major set back. Optimally, wear Neosil® scar sheeting for 12 hours daily and apply Neosil serum a minimum of 3 times daily.
How does silicone help to shrink and fade my scar?
Silicone sheeting and serum creates an ideal occlusive barrier which pressures and improves moisture levels at the scar site. Pressure and moisture assists the body to reabsorb excessive collagen to fade and shrink the scar.
Are all scars the same?
All scars are not the same. Damage to skin tissue results in various types of scars. Neosil® scar treatments work best on keloid, hypertrophic and burn scars – basically scars that are raised or discolored or burn sites that require improved elasticity.
Can I use Neosil® on unhealed wounds or broken skin?
Neosil® products should only be used on fully healed skin – whether wounds (cuts, burns, abrasions) or post surgery. Neosil® products are not sterile and they are occlusive, meaning that they do not allow the passing of body fluids and oxygen.
Can I use Neosil® after surgery?
Once the surgical wound has fully healed – i.e. there is no exudate or fluid seepage from the site – you can apply Neosil® scar treatment products to manage and minimize the incidence of scarring.
What about old scars?
Neosil® will help to fade and flatten scars of any age.
What about stretch marks?
Silicone scar systems generally are not ideal for use on stretch marks. However, the application of scar sheeting or serum to stretch marks can help to hydrate the skin and improve the appearance of the skin in that area.
Can Neosil® products be used on children?
Neosil® scar treatments can be used on children. Sheets, however, could be a choking hazard, so we recommend use only on children over the age of 6.
Can Neosil® be used during pregnancy?
Yes, Neosil® can be used during pregnancy. It contains only medical grade silicone – there are no harmful or active ingredients.
